Iridology is not something that would normally be discussed in a MI optometrist office. A MI optometrist might call iridology quackery. That said, there are many people who view iridology as an interesting form of diagnostics. Iridology is considered an alternative medical practice that takes the notion of eyes being windows into the soul almost literally, and believes they are at the very least windows into the health of the body.
Iridology is based on the belief that the body functions in a holistic fashion, whereby the organs and various parts of the body are connected by energy meridians. These meridians can be found through out the body, but can be clustered in various extremities. Reflexology believes all the organs have corresponding points in the feet and hands. The ear is another body part that holds points that correspond with the body. Acupuncture is an ancient medicine that relies on meridians and also sees these points clustered in feet, hands, ears, tongue and other areas of the body. Iridology is simply the study of the iris, assigning different segments and locations of the body able to reflect the health or lack of health with different indicators.
The right and left eye are mirror reflections of each other and represent different sides of the body. If the eye were a clock face with 12 being the top and 6 the bottom, then the various organs would be flipped horizontally. For example, the one o'clock position on the right eye represents the forehead and temple. This would be in the eleven o'clock position on the left eye. Each segment of the eye radiating out from the iris, like spokes on a bicycle wheel, is associated with a body part. In addition there are rings around the iris like ripples on a still pond, which also have significance. The head is the top, the feet the bottom, the skin on the outer most portion of the iris and the internal organs closer to the pupil. By looking into these areas, an iridologist determines what is happening within the body.
Iridology relies on the concept that the iris is as distinct as a finger print and offers insight into the individuals' physical, emotional and mental health. It is also based on the concept the illness starts from within and works its way out. It believes that the best possible treatment relies on diagnosing the core problem from which the symptoms emanate. The idea is to work in reverse order of the appearance of symptoms to help promote better health and trace back to the original problem. Iridology is not a science that can determine what the illness or disease might be. It is used more to look at the wellness of a body and determine what tissue masses are encountering problems. It has often been used as an early indicator to potential disease.
Iridology is used by many alternative healers in the same way that a doctor might use the information gathered from listening to a cough, taking blood pressure or looking at a tongue. It has its advocates and its critics. Those who believe in iridology believe it offers a literal insight into health.
Connor Sullivan recently visited a Grand Blanc MI optometrist [http://lionheartoptometry.com/grand_blanc] when he was traveling on business. He purchased new eye glasses from a Sandusky MI optometrist [http://lionheartoptometry.com/sandusky] while he was there.
